Active learning in large lectures: five techniques
Active learning in a large lecture means stopping every twenty minutes for something every student does: a concept question with a vote and a discussion (peer instruction, as Eric Mazur set it out), a think-pair-share on a prompt, a one-minute paper, a muddiest-point card, or an exit ticket. Each costs three to six minutes, needs one slide, and scales to a hall of 150 because the work is done in seats, not at the front.
This guide gives the five techniques with the slide, the timing and the failure mode of each, and how to fit them into the block structure of a lecture.
1. Peer instruction (concept question with a vote)
Slide: one multiple-choice question on the block's concept, four options, one right for the right reason and two wrong for the common reasons.
Run: everyone votes alone (hands, cards, or a poll); if 30–70% are right, "convince your neighbour" for two minutes, vote again, then explain. If nearly everyone is right, move on; if nearly everyone is wrong, teach it again.
Cost: five to seven minutes. Fails when the question is recall (no discussion possible) or the options are not the actual misconceptions.
2. Think-pair-share
Slide: a prompt with a definite output: "Draw the Gantt chart for these three processes under FCFS" or "Write the one criterion you would optimise, and why".
Run: one minute alone, two minutes in pairs, three answers aloud. Walk the room during the pair phase; that is where you hear the misconceptions.
Cost: five minutes. Fails when the prompt has no output ("discuss scheduling"), or the share phase is skipped so nobody knows what the room thought.
3. The one-minute paper
Slide: two questions: "What was the most important point of this block?" and "What question do you still have?"
Run: one minute, on paper or a form, at the end of a block. Read them before the next lecture; open it with the three most common questions.
Cost: two minutes. Fails when they are collected and never mentioned again.
4. The muddiest point
Slide: "What was the muddiest point of today's lecture?" One line each.
Run: the last two minutes, anonymous. Sort them into three piles; answer the largest pile at the start of the next lecture, in the handout, or in the forum.
Cost: two minutes plus ten of yours. Fails when the answer never arrives.
5. The exit ticket
Slide: one problem that uses the day's claim, solvable in three minutes, and a place to submit it.
Run: the last five minutes; students leave when done. Mark for completion, not correctness; the distribution of answers tells you what to reteach.
Cost: five minutes. Fails when it is graded harshly (students stop guessing) or ignored (students stop doing it).
Fitting them into the hour
A lecture in twenty-minute blocks has a natural slot at the end of each block. A pattern that holds for a 60-minute lecture:

Two techniques per hour is plenty; five is a workshop.
Scaling to 150
- The work is at the seats; you only need to hear three answers to know the room.
- Voting needs no technology: coloured cards, or fingers held to the chest.
- Walking the room during pair work is the only way to hear the misconceptions; leave the lectern.
- Collect written responses with a form; sorting 150 cards is the part that does not scale on paper.
- Announce the technique the first week so it is a routine, not a surprise.
